AI Implementation Subsidy 2026 Starts on March 30
Details on Japan's AI Implementation Subsidy 2026 for small businesses, starting March 30, with support caps of 4.5 million to 30 million yen.
The "Digitalization and AI Implementation Subsidy 2026," which supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in operational improvements and market expansion, is scheduled to start accepting applications on March 30, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Renamed from the previous IT Implementation Subsidy, it has been repositioned as a framework that goes beyond supporting simple software installation to encourage deeper digitalization and AI utilization.
According to the official website, the Regular Category covers software purchase costs, cloud service fees, and installation-related expenses, offering subsidies ranging from 50,000 yen up to 4.5 million yen. The Invoice Category supports the implementation of accounting, ordering, and payment functions necessary to comply with the invoice system, providing up to 3.5 million yen depending on the sub-type. The Security Measures Promotion Category supports up to 1.5 million yen, and the Multi-party Collaboration Digitalization/AI Category, designed for collective initiatives at shopping streets or regional levels, offers up to 30 million yen.
Under the latest revision, new requirements have been added for businesses that received grants in previous fiscal years and are applying again. Businesses selected for this subsidy between 2022 and 2025 must formulate a three-year business plan starting from the fiscal year following their application, and meet specified conditions such as declaring plans for growth in total payroll or wage increases. Non-fulfillment of these conditions or failure to submit effectiveness reports could make them subject to returning the subsidy, so caution is required.
Regarding the schedule, the first deadline for the Regular Category, Invoice Category, and Security Measures Promotion Category is May 12, 2026, at 5:00 PM, with grant decisions expected on June 18. The first deadline for the Multi-party Collaboration Category is June 15 at 5:00 PM, with grant decisions scheduled for July 23. Since application categories and deadlines have been organized in detail alongside the name change, eligible businesses should confirm their implementation goals and requirements compatibility early on.
In response to labor shortages and rising prices, an increasing number of SMEs are promoting back-office automation, online ordering and accounting, and utilizing AI for demand forecasting and customer service. This system revision reshapes the program to encompass these practical demands more broadly. Because specific conditions vary depending on the eligible expenses and application types, be sure to check the latest application guidelines and official schedule before applying.
